NARA’s DocsTeach App

Docs Teach Screenshot

DocsTeach is a mobile application developed by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) that allows teachers to create and share lesson plans built on the DocsTeach website with their students.

The DocsTeach App was built at the request of teachers so their students could access lesson plans built on the DocsTeach website while in the classroom. The app is available on the iOS platform. According to NARA, features include:

• Choose a historical era or topic to find an activity based on primary source documents such as the US Constitution, the canceled check for the purchase of Alaska, and Thomas Edison’s patent drawing for the light bulb.

• Participate in DocsTeach activities made with the Focusing on Details, Making Connections, Finding a Sequence, Mapping History, Weighing the Evidence, or Seeing the Big Picture tools.

• Tap and drag document icons to move them within activities.

• Tap to view documents. Zoom and inspect individual pages of documents using the controls in the document viewing window.

• Students: Find activities specifically assigned by your teacher using your classroom code.

• Teachers: Share the unique code from your DocsTeach.org classroom with your students so they can find and complete just the activities you have chosen or prepared for them.

Trends on Tuesday: Apps vs Mobile Web, again

Last week, we moderated a session on what the research shows on mobile use–and our regular discussion about whether people prefer mobile web over native apps.

Our speakers, Aaron Smith from Pew Internet and David Metcalf from Univ. of Central Florida, had pros and cons for both approaches, but ultimately agreed that, It Depends.

eMarketer has some data that ads flavor to what people like to do on different platforms.

Mobile tasks mobile web vs. mobile app in 2011: shop 73% browser, 27% app; search 63% v 37%; entertain 60% v 40%; manage 46 v 65; inform 39 v. 61; navigate 35 v 65; connnect 31 v 69

from eMarketer.com

They said

People overwhelmingly use a mobile browser for shopping, searching and accessing entertainment via their smartphones. But when they are navigating or acquiring information, apps are preferred. –more from eMarketer

As we (always) say, agencies need to think about what they expect people will DO with their mobile product, and then build the experience around the task.  And keep following the trends.
