- Make USA.gov pages shorter and more focused
- Expand to other languages besides English and Spanish
- Widgetize content so it can be re-used on other websites

This is my first time at this site.
It seems to have many possibilities for brainstorming with a wide network of concerned citizens to share solutions for issues we want to have resolved. I will continue reading & add some ideas for consideration. Another may see how it could be improved upon or implemented. We need to share, expand & create solutions as a team.
I have tried to get Personal Health Insurance. I was denied because that Insurance Co. couldn’t believe I was so healthy at 50 years old! The premiums were high & I was denied, yet it took several months for them to come to that decision.
Thus, I’d like to form our own Group, as those with Group coverage, get pre-existing and non-pre-existing coverage equally for a lower monthly premium. How can we do this?

All electronics items sell in USA Land by Foreign Countries should have at least Assembly Plants, since they DON’T MANUFACTURE HERE.
They are simply DUMPING THEIR PRODUCTS-TV,CELL PHONES, ETC.
EVERY ITEMS SHOULD BE FEDERAL IMPOSE TAX UNTIL FOREIGN COMPANIES DO.
This process will produce JOBS FOR THE POOR PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY!

The best thing about your page (and Google Uncle Sam does NOT do it) is that search results are clustered. (If people don’t know what I mean, do a search and look at the left side of the results page). It is GREAT that I can sort through results by agency.
Two suggestions: Go to the Google page and the cursor appears in the search box, ready to go. At usa.gov the cursor doesn’t show up at all and you have to use the mouse to put it in the box. Why make everyone do that extra step?
Second, why not create a Newsstand link so people can easily find and browse the latest issue of government magazines like FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, State Magazine, Agricultural Research, Armor, Health For Native Life, etc?
I agree with those who think a less cluttered home page would be an improvement. Have you tried Usability.gov?
Agree with the comment on results clustering. Could the useful and unique agency cluster tab be the default, rather than the topic cluster tab?

I really like the idea of a newsstand link for federal journals and magazine.

wright now i do not know if its going to help the people i serviced my country in the US. AIR FORCE and did my part for my country. I got a home with a VA loan and thay did not help at all. I did all thay ask me to do but thay say that i did not send in the papers and i did and i lost my home. We our both disabled but the VA turn there back on us and i think thay do not like the disabled people we did not ask to be this way. I just think that the will help if you have a lot money thats what is all about money thay did not give us a cost of living increase this next year and we can not make it to well on what we get. I would like to get a grant but its so hard to do and i do not know the first thing on how to get one just to get a home that we can live in and thats not asking for much. there out people out ther that will do it for you but you need to pay them to do it how come the Government makes thing so hard to do. I said my all i can at this time but will be back.

I’m a little puzzled at the intent of some of the content for state and local government. For example, if I want to find the Administration for Children and Families, I’d go to Agencies > HHS > ACF . I would not consider going to:
Government employees > state and local > health and families > ACF.
Since there is not an exhaustive list of agencies, it just begs the question about why some are there.
This is a quibble … it’s a great site. Am looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Yes, many people need/want to be educated with how to procede to get to the information that they seek. MORE Public awareness is needed.
This is a Great Concept for Ideas.
I just learned about this today & see that it is only open till January 8th, 2010! More time, to get the networking & brainstorming out there & then put it together, is necessary. Please consider extending that Jan. 8, 2010 deadline.

I’ve referred hundreds of people to this site ever since learning of it as the best source for all things governmental, regardless of level. I’ve never had someone say anything negative about it. I know keeping it maintained is a lot of work, but it’s well worth the effort.
Thanks for all you do.

I especially like the FAQ database. It has been helpful in a number of inquiries. It would be nice if the FAQ results could be integrated with your general web search somehow.
But the country is definitely better off since usa.gov, formerly firstgov.gov went online.

I think that including other languages(Arab, Chinese, French,German,Italian )would help other people to know or to give opinions.

Hi M&M not to be disrespectful but you are full of hot air. We don’t live in other countries but in AMERICA and we speak ENGLISH here. If they want to understand our laws and our way of life, they need to LEARN “ENGLISH” We have spoken English for centuries and now is not the time to change. If you want to live here then by God, learn my language. If you don’t like it move back home to your country.

The web site in and of itself is outstanding. What is needed are more research tools to aid us when looking for authority to implement a policy or instructions for compliance. This is true when the researcher had drilled down to the agency level.

I am very happy with a LOT of information and links on the main usa.gov page, but if most folks like “simplicity”, a comprehensive and well populated site index is a good substitute for a very long home page, as are “mouse over” drop down menus under main headings.
I mostly use usasearch.gov, and rely on it extensively for helping library patrons find reports and state/federal websites. I generally like its Google search, but would like command line searching from the simple search boxes; similar to Ebsco, Proquest, and many other commercial database search engines. A good compromise (if full command search is too expensive) would be au, ti, url, publication date (or date of last update) – as the main limiters needed. I would love to have proximity search – one of the MAIN things Google also needs to add to its search. Clear date information in the title lists would be nice. If you default to relevance ranking, that’s fine for most users – but please give us librarians an option to display by “oldest first” and “newest first” – even if the date is the latest update and not the original publication date. – Thanks for a very useful site, and search engine.
P.S., by “URL” I meant to say “character string from a URL”, for example, I may know that NASA or HHS has done something, and just want to try those few letters extracted from a long URL – to get reports limited just to the kind of research THAT agency would be likely to publish

How about finding someone in the White house with direct access to this site that could answer personal posts honestly and quickley?
I would like to see the govenment stand up and protect all us citizens of the USA that have been burdened with corupt Credit Card companies and what they have done to everyones credit scores. So I propose that there be a direct link to someone who has the answers or can find the answers on how to fix these types of issues. ( I only say from personal experience that Credit Card Companies and Banks have led to a lot of people getting ruined by their greedy need to make a buck. They closed all my credit cards and that then goes to credit reporting agencies as derogatory and guess what your crredit scores tumble. ) If the Government can put together a website to give out BAILOUT money to banks and mortgage and securities companies then they sure as heck can start working on bailing us US citizens out.

The USA.gov site needs to take a, for lack of better words/analogy, more “google” approach to its face. There is too much on the page and this needs to be trimmed way down.
The normal persons’ brain is going to be so overwhelmed on that one page they will just leave it and not come back.
The sites search engine seems to be fairly fast and accurate. I did a couple random searches that returned relevant information quickly so the use of the search engine can probably be relied upon for people to find the info they need/want.

I think the main page needs more than a “google box.” So many people simply aren’t aware of everything the government has to offer. I also like the rotating displays because of the serendipitous discovery it offers.

I love whoever thought of the “widgetizing” idea! That is great. I’d love to take some widgets from you guys to put on my own blog or website! Also, just update the “look” of the homepage of usa.gov and make it a bit more clean looking, esp. in the “Government Information by Topic” area. I’ll think of some more ideas later but for now, I’ll be spreading the word to my fellow librarians, government information librarians, and students to get there input. Thanks!

The USAgov site is one of the WORST sites on the planet. Period.
I don’t know what to say. But I do appreciate the fact you FINALLY are soliciting opinions from the public.
Here are some thoughts:
1) Our nation is dissolving, in case you didn’t notice. One of the things that’s pulling our govt. apart is this idiotic quest to “contract out”, “bid out” or turn over to the “private sector” almost everything that use to be done by govt. agencies. That’s what’s happened to this website and the agencies it is suppose to serve.
2) 1st big problem: you NEVER get a response from ANYONE when you submit your resume
3) 2nd big problem: you can’t contact REAL people. The website is essentially a cover to keep you from interacting with anyone from these agencies
4) Gotta run. Will post more later.

Must be the correct orientation of how the correct and accept opinions even if they are contrary to America and our friends Ray Vallden returned their people are serious violations brought to bear on our fathers and grandfathers, and now we are being told is once of the world

Maybe Congress could approach the health insurance solution, in the same way that the DMV assigns high risk drivers to random insurance companies, who Must Insure these drivers, so that they can obtain necessary vehicle insurance.
Those who have been denied health insurance, due to pre-existing conditions, or the Insurance company’s fear of an unknown pre-existing condition causing denial of coverage (this happened to me) could then get Insurance in a similar system, so that all of us who want to be insured, can be insured. It seems that Insurance companies expect trouble once we reach the magical age of insurance denial at 50, so I imagine it only gets worse with each year.
I would prefer to choose my own Personal Insurance company and let everybody with or without pre-existing issues to be covered, in the same fashion, as those with group policies are now. Those of us without a group could get together to form our own group, name it, then pre-existing & non pre-existing conditions are all covered.

Good morning Beutiful America!
Now, American Citizens, listen me one moment, please.
WHY AMERICA is my “adopted” Country?
Also (at last) for this site.
You give us an AMERICAN OPPORTUNITY to say our “Ideas”, it’s INCREDIBLE for me:)
Here, in Italy, if someone is NOT communist, NO OPPORTUNITY is given to him, nor to speack, nor to WRITE about the REAL ITALIAN TRUE FACTS on own blog-site.
Making A DIFFERENCE, AMERICA remain the TEACHER and the EXAMPLE of REAL DEMOCRACY in the world!
YOU MUST NEVER FORGET THIS, my Americans Friends!!!
So, I want say to US Gov: THANKS my FIRST COUNTRY!
I love all You, Happy Christmas Beautiful Friends:)

The current USA.gov site is a HUGE improvement over preceding versions. Here are a couple of suggestions to make it even more user-friendly:
1) Offer a “Live Chat” feature during regular government business hours. It could be staffed by volunteers, or a mix of paid employees and volunteers.
2) Feature a link to the U.S. Military and Veterans’ page from http://www.defenselink.mil, http://www.va.gov, and the home pages for the individual services.
3) Offer a “Live Chat” feature for veterans seeking federal employment, or any kind of government assistance;
4) Start a virtual mentoring program for veterans seeking federal employment. Mentors would be current federal employees. Mentors and veterans seeking employment would enter their information in a searchable database. If this initiative is successful, it could be expanded to any number of programs. Cost should be minimal.
5) Offer more initiatives like this one, including awards/incentives for people who volunteer their time and expertise to improve http://www.usa.gov.
Thanks for a great effort!

The USA Search is really a great tool. Maybe that should be front and center and more isolated on the page, sort of like google. Fewer distractioins.
Then I would ask federal agencies to send their metrics on their top requested links. Sort through these and give them some priority on the homepage. then you really know what the taxpayers are looking for.

I gave the thumbs up for the second part of the suggestion only.

I support you. Your the first President to put the burden on the voter.
Sen.McCain and You stated the real problem during your campaign. Congress is BROKEN. BIG BUSINESS controls CONGRESS. This financial meltdown was expected by Congress long before it happened, Congress allowed it to happen because CONGRESS is paid for by big business.
Every day we hear about lobby money buying Congress. Congress passed a secret law called the Loop Hole law, this makes voters believe a good law is passed, then Congress adds the loop hole making the new law invalid and meaningless. They do this so business will not spend money protecting the public, so business has money to get them re- elected to Congress. Have you heard about this:
10 years ago Congress passed a law to remove 1500 known and named toxic chemicals dumped into public waters by big biz,at a rate of over 100,000 tons each year. The loop hole: Congress would provide funds to EPA to fine the companies dumping toxic into waters. Except after 10 years CONGRESS has NEVER provided the money and the EPA can do nothing until they get the money, they can not use existing money because the bill states, the EPA must wait until Congress gives them money. Americans are being posioned each day because of big.biz money does not go to clean up water, it go to help Congress people get elected again, and again and again. why spend money on both when you have Congress already paid for.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
This message was to the President reply web page, except his links do not work
THIS MESSAGE PAGE DOES NOT HAVE A WAY TO SEND THE ABOVE MESSAGE to you ( A LOOP HOLE) via the web master of this web site.
Elect a all new Congress and theres a chance to eliminate major problems. They all must go, the few good with the lots of bad.

Never visited this site, until now. First impression is that it is WAY too flat. I would literally cut 90% of the links off the front page, and divide things up into bigger buckets. It is painful to parse the contents of the page. No clear hierarchy. And just trying to offer too much in one place. Make it clear, fun, and useful.

I think it’s already clear, fun and useful. I wish I could suggest a way for the usa.gov folks to get a truly random sample of users to talk about their feelings for the home page.

Please add a way to make direct request to the government such as passing an extension of the EUC benefits for the unemployed for 2010 for at least 6 months. Also, for those on unemployment and who are approved to go to school I think that the government should continue to provide unemployment benefits while in school so that a person is not forced to drop out of school because their benefits end and they have to get a job they don’t want to pay the bills.

A link to an appropriate agency or representative, including allied state agencies would be a great idea to helping people presenting issues. That would turn this into a clearinghouse for opinions and solutions, ideally with a way to track peoples success or failure so that other people passing down the same path can avoid pitfalls or take shortcuts.
